About this place

9th-century dwellings in the rain shadow, restored with mud plaster and goat-hair warmth

Samar sits where the Kali Gandaki valley turns moonscape. Six rooms are cut into soft rock that has been lived in since the 10th century; the family who owns them rebuilt the fronts in mud and lime, put in double-glazed timber windows (an outrageous expense, brought by truck from Pokhara), and left the cave walls alone.

Inside a cave in Mustang is stable at 12–14°C all winter, which sounds cold and is not, once the bhukhari stove is going and the felt is down. You come here for silence, for the Tashi Gangmar murals, and for what the rain shadow means: 300 days of sun while everyone else treks in cloud.

  • Zero single-use plastic policy enforced by the village committee
  • Sky burial site walk with the lambric gompa
  • Night sky without a single streetlight — the Milky Way arrives at 21:00
  • Horse (not pony) transport arranged by the household

Guest room

Caves 1 and 2 have the windows and the best daylight; caves 4–6 are deeper, darker and sleep better. All beds take two duvets plus felt. Bring a balaclava for the pre-dawn hours.

What this place does NOT have

Hosts who list these get 3× fewer complaints, so we made the field required.

  • Hot water after 19:00 (water is carried and heated)
  • Attached bathroom (three shared, immaculate)

Altitude
3,750 m with sleeping above 3,700. Do not drive straight here from Pokhara; two nights in Kagbeni or Marpha first, or you will not sleep.
Oxygen
Two cylinders, pulse oximeter, and Tsering is trained to send you down by horse if your saturation drops.
Dryness
150 mm of rain a year. Lips, sinuses and camera batteries need management; water refills free.
Wind
Afternoon wind is a force here. Activities are at dawn; the stove is tested twice a year.
Connectivity
Ncell reaches parts of the ridge only. Tell people you will be unreachable; that is the product.

We had flown into Jomsom, got stuck a day for wind, and Tsering drove up with hot drinks to meet us. The caves are warm with the stove, the food is unbelievable for Mustang, and the night sky at 21:00 made one of us cry. His honesty about altitude is the reason to book this instead of a hotel in Kagbeni.

Things to know

House rules

  • No flash photography inside the gompa or of the murals anywhere.
  • Walk clockwise around chortens and mani walls; pass under, never over, prayer-flag lines.
  • Don't remove anything from the caves — not a tile, not a bone. The committee fines visitors, not hosts.
  • Firewood is rationed by the village; don't ask for the stove to be fed twice.
  • Tipping is not expected but porters and horsemen are paid per day — pay them, not us, and pay in cash.

Check-in & out

  • Self or with-host check-in from 14:00
  • Check-out by 11:00
  • Late arrival? Tell the host — villages lock gates
  • Not set up for infants

Cancellation

40% refundable until 7 days before. Flights cancelled for wind: no charge for your extra night in Jomsom, we cover it.

HimaGo covers your extra night if a strike, landslide or flight cancellation strands you — no claim form.
