About this place
Six thatched rooms in a Tharu village on the Karnali, west of the crowds
This is community tourism done properly: the longhouse belongs to a co-operative, the guides are all from Thakurdwara, and the houses you sleep in were rebuilt after the 2021 floods with raised plinths and local timber. Rooms have real beds, mosquito nets, solar hot water and enamel basins.
Bardiya is flat, huge, green and quiet in a way Chitwan stopped being years ago. People come for rhino and swamp deer, leave talking about the Tharu evening (the Nachari dance, the liquor made from mahuwa, the jokes), and mostly come back.

- Nets and repellent; the rooms are screened. Malaria was eliminated but dengue circulates — use the net.

- Ncell 4G in the compound, no signal in the deep forest. Radio from the guide office to reception.

- ATM in Thakurdwara (Nabil Bank) with a 20,000 daily cap and frequent empty trays. Take cash from Nepalgunj.

Getting there
- Fly to Nepalgunj55 min from Kathmandu (NPR 9,000–13,000 one way, morning flights only — afternoon is weather). Then 1.5 h by jeep, NPR 3,000.
- BusKathmandu → Nepalgunj 14–16 h (night bus, NPR 1,600–2,200); or long day to Ghorahi and a local jeep. It's real distance; budget for the flight.
- From PokharaNo sensible road route in one day; fly via Kathmandu or Nepalgunj.

Bardiya should be in every itinerary and this longhouse should be in every Bardiya week. Rhino with a naturalist on foot, a canoe at sunset, Nachari dance at 19:30 that we were invited into, and the co-operative structure means your money is the village's. Simpler than Chitwan's resorts and ten times more honest.
Things to know
House rules
- Torches only after 19:00 outside; no bright lights in the buffer zone.
- The Tharu dance evening starts at 19:30 and is not a show to heckle; you're invited to join the second dance, not the first.
- No plastic bottles: refill flasks provided. Please don't bring packaged snacks in.
- Don't wear or buy wildlife products; report anyone offering them to reception.
- Photograph homes and people after asking; some houses have shrines that are not for photos.
