About this place

Canvas on a raised platform by the river; canoe, jungle walk and Tharu dance in the price

The camp is run by a co-operative of eleven families; the guides are all from Sauraha or nearby Tharu villages, and the money stays in the buffer-zone committees. Six tents face the Rapti on raised wooden platforms, each with a real bed, a net, a private deck and a bathroom behind a canvas wall with a proper door.

Days have a rhythm: 05:30 birding or canoe while the river is glassy, breakfast, heat, an afternoon jungle walk on the sal forest edge, then either a Tharu stick-dance performance or sitting on the deck watching the water turn orange.

  • Two activities every day included: canoe, jungle walk, bike or Tharu village
  • Solar-heated bucket shower with a real tiled bathroom
  • No elephant rides, ever — the camp funds the retirement herd instead

Tent

Tents 3 and 4 have the clearest river line and the best hornbill tree. Tent 6 is the family tent (double + two singles) and is nearest the kitchen — lovely, but you'll hear pots at 05:00.

What this place does NOT have

Hosts who list these get 3× fewer complaints, so we made the field required.

  • Air conditioning — fans plus river breeze (Nov–Feb is cold at night; heaters on)
  • Swimming pool in the river (not allowed, mugger country)

Nepal reality check

Checked by a HimaGo team member on site — not claimed by the host.

Wildlife is wild
Rhinos graze within 300 m. Guides carry radios and walk you round, not through. This is the actual reason people pay.
Heat
April reaches 42°C. Book Apr–Jun for birding and accept the mid-day shutdown; Oct–Feb is t-shirt weather by day, fleece at dawn.
Mosquitoes
Nets provided and closed before dusk; repellent at reception; chikungunya/dengue happen in the Terai, so use them.
Cash
Sauraha ATMs take foreign cards but cap at NPR 35,000/day and eat notes. eSewa works almost everywhere now.

Kids 7 and 10. Canoe at dawn with a rhino 60 m away, no elephant rides, and Gokarna let the children help with the salt lick counts. Tents have real beds and nets and the bathroom had hot water. Best value stay in Nepal for a family, full stop.

Good camp, honest staff, and I liked that the guide said which restaurants in Sauraha pay commission for bringing foreigners. It rained sideways the day we arrived and the deck was still warm with a fire. The 4-star is because the food is repetitive by night two — bring chilli of your own.

Gokarna Chaudhary replied

Saved, sister. We're adding Thakali set rotation in March.

Things to know

House rules

  • Torch, not phone light, on the night walk — and walk single file behind the guide.
  • No drones in the buffer zone without park permission (the camp will apply for you).
  • Please don't wear or buy anything made from wildlife, coral or big-cat parts.
  • Alcohol only in the bar; the Tharu dance night is a performance, not a party to crash.
  • Shoes off in the dining shala.

Check-in & out

  • Self or with-host check-in from 12:00
  • Check-out by 10:00
  • Late arrival? Tell the host — villages lock gates
  • Cots and high chairs available

Cancellation

Free cancellation until 48 h before arrival. National Park closures refund in full.

HimaGo covers your extra night if a strike, landslide or flight cancellation strands you — no claim form.
