About this place

Two bamboo cottages inside a working 1960s tea estate, plucking at 06:00 optional

The estate has been growing tea since 1967; these two cottages were the old manager's bungalows, repaired by the workers' co-operative so guests could stay without the whole village having to become a hotel. Bamboo frame, mud-plaster infill, wooden shutters, a deck over the rows.

There is nowhere to 'do' here, which is the point. You can walk the plucking lines at 06:00, learn to sort leaf in the withering shed, take the ridge path for Kanchenjunga, or sit with a cup and a book while the mist sits in the Arjun valley. Dinner is Limbu-Rai cooking with estate cheese and Gundruk that will ruin instant noodles for you.

Cottage 1 ("Chakhewa") has the double bed and the bathtub made from a repurposed water tank. Cottage 2 has two singles and the better sunrise deck. Both are coolest in July and need the quilt in December.

Getting there

Bus from Kathmandu11–13 h to Ilam Bazar (NPR 1,150–1,600). Overnight is the normal way; the estate picks up at the bus park.
Flight to Bhadrapur35 min, then 2.5 h uphill by jeep (NPR 3,500). Best option if you have two days, worst in rain season.
From Biratnagar3.5 h by road; a shared jeep to Ilam then 30 min up the estate road.
Last stretch4 km of paved-then-gravel estate road. Any car can make it in dry months; in August the top corner gets muddy and needs a tractor.

I came for two nights and stayed five. The plucking at 06:00, the withering shed, the ridge in mist, and Nirmala's mother teaching me to fold sel roti. It is not a luxury property and it is not meant to be — the bathroom, the bed and the food were all excellent. I bought two kilos of first flush at cost.

Things to know

House rules

Please don't pick tea yourself — the plucking is paid work and the rows are measured.
Dogs (the estate's two very old ones) rule the deck; food is not shared with them by guests.
Fire only in the deck bhatti; the thatch is original.
Quiet from 22:00 — the pluckers wake at 04:45 and deserve it.
Buy the tea at the shed, not from the middlemen at the gate; the price difference is their wage.
