About this place

Stone house, millet bread, handloom, and a 60 km Himalayan wall from the roof

Karma and Dolkal built this house in 1998 and added three guest rooms in 2017 with a homestay grant from the municipality. The families live upstairs; you get breakfast, dinner and whatever is happening — threshing in Bhadra, the loom in winter, the chhyang dance if the lha gang decides it's time.

From the roof on a clear morning you can read the wall from Ganesh Himal to Gaurishankar. On a February morning, when the valley below fills with fog and Kathmandu disappears, people cry a bit. It happens regularly. Karma says it's the altitude.

Winter: Nights reach −2°C in Jan; the rooms are cold, the heater and hot-water bottle are not optional. Come for that, though: the view is at its best.
Altitude: 1,665 m — shortness of breath on the ridge walk, not a problem for sleeping.

Getting there

From Kathmandu1 h 20 by private car (NPR 3,200); Karma's brother picks up for NPR 2,400 with a proper licence.
Public busBhrikutimandap → Banepa every 20 min, NPR 130; then 20 min local jeep to Bangoth (NPR 100, shared).
By bicycleBeloved route: Banepa–Namobuddha road, 14 km, 800 m of climb. Bike hire in Banepa NPR 600/day; the house has a stand and a pump.
Last stretchFinal 1.2 km is a concrete village lane, steep and lovely. Bags can be portered by the nephew for a cigarette.

Four nights with my teenage son: threshing in the rain under a tarpaulin, a loom lesson from the grandmother, and Gaurishankar appearing for one perfect 10-minute window. Karma knows the fog better than any app. Hot water, Wi-Fi that worked, and food I am still trying to reproduce at home badly.

हामी १२ जनाको साथी समूह। Karma arranged the whole ridge walk, then dinner for twelve without extra charge beyond what he quoted. Rooms were warmer than we expected with the heater and blankets. From the roof at sunrise the whole range was there, no clouds, and nobody there to share it with. NPR 3,900 is a joke — they should charge more.

House rules

Eat when the family eats; late arrivals get a plate kept warm, not a separate service.
Around the chhyang ceremony: no flash, no tripod, no questions during the drumming.
Please don't give sweets or money to the village children — ask Karma for the school's book fund instead.
Alcohol in the house only on the deck, and raksi is measured in walnut shells for a reason.
Dogs: two, gentle, and they are on duty. Do not encourage them to your room.
