About this place

Inside the monastic zone: bikes at the door, temple bells, and no traffic noise

Kenzo Tange's plan for the Lumbini Development Zone put 60 monasteries in a grid of sal groves and ponds, with no cars allowed in the middle. This guesthouse sits on its southern edge, so what you hear at 04:30 is chanting from the Myanmar temple, and what you see is a heron in the pond.

Five clean rooms, a long veranda, and bikes. The staff will take you on the cycling loop at dawn (the nunnery is open to visitors on Tuesdays), book an auto to the Temple of the Peace, and get you to Bhairahawa/ Gautam Buddha airport in 40 minutes.

  • Buddha's birthplace: Maya Devi Temple and the Bodhi tree, 12 min by bike
  • Free bikes and a dawn cycling route through the monastic zone
  • Meditation hour at 05:45 with the Thai monastery's monk (optional, free)
  • Terai thali with mustard-fish in season, and no chilli you can't handle — say the word

What this place does NOT have

Hosts who list these get 3× fewer complaints, so we made the field required.

  • Room heater (Terai Dec–Feb can hit 8°C at night; hot water bottles supplied)
  • Air conditioning — fans and cross-ventilation instead (a few rooms have AC, ask)

Nepal reality check

Checked by a HimaGo team member on site — not claimed by the host.

Heat
Apr–Jun reaches 45°C and mid-day sightseeing is a mistake. Go out at 05:30 and 16:30, nap in between. Oct–Feb is perfect.
Mosquitoes
Terai, so yes — nets, closed windows at dusk, and repellent at reception. Dengue risk in Sept–Oct.
Wi-Fi
18 Mbps; enough for calls. The monasteries have better connections than the hotels.
Cash
Tilamaiya Bazar ATMs 10 min away; eSewa works at most shops. Lumbini's shops take card, badly.
Dress
Temples: covered shoulders, sometimes shoes off entirely. Ramkali's team lends scarves at the gate.

Bikes, dawn chanting, and a 12-minute ride to Maya Devi before the tour buses. No AC and no heater, but they give you a hot-water bottle and the fan is enough in January evenings. Ramkali's team is extremely kind. The cycling loop at 05:30 is the best thing I did in Nepal and it was free.

Things to know

House rules

  • No alcohol anywhere in the sacred zone (it's the law, not a preference).
  • Silence in the monasteries; switch your phone to silent before entering the temple.
  • No drones and no tripods in the zone without a permit.
  • Don't touch or climb the statues; ask the monk if you want to sit in meditation.
  • Lights out on the veranda at 22:30 — the herons sleep too.

Check-in & out

  • Self or with-host check-in from 13:00
  • Check-out by 11:00
  • Late arrival? Tell the host — villages lock gates
  • Cots and high chairs available

Cancellation

Free cancellation until 24 h before. No cancellation fee ever for pilgrimage groups who get stuck at the border.

HimaGo covers your extra night if a strike, landslide or flight cancellation strands you — no claim form.
